Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro PoE review: is it right for a local NVR?

Choose the G5 Pro PoE when an outdoor camera also needs to serve an Apple-oriented smart-home role and a wired PoE installation is available. It is one of the more interesting bridge products for OmniNVR because its RTSP stream gives a local-NVR path, but the buyer should keep hub features, vendor recording, and third-party NVR recording conceptually separate.

This is a research-based buying assessment, not a lab test performed by OmniNVR. It separates current manufacturer documentation from the linked reviewer coverage, then treats a successful live stream and recorded timeline on the buyer's own network as the final compatibility test.

What the current product documentation establishes

Aqara's G5 Pro documentation describes a 2.6K camera with a 133-degree diagonal view, outdoor use, a PoE model using 802.3af Ethernet, local eMMC storage, and RTSP configuration. It does not use a user-replaceable microSD card, so the local-storage architecture is different from a conventional camera with an SD slot.

Specifications describe the product family and available options; they do not prove that a particular firmware, regional SKU, network, or third-party recorder will behave identically. Confirm the full model code before ordering and retain the current manual with the camera inventory.

What published reviews are useful for

Tom's Guide and Smart Home Scene both cover the G5 Pro as a camera plus hub and explicitly discuss RTSP. Their practical emphasis is useful: image performance and smart-home integration can be strong together, but the buyer must decide whether one multifunction device is an advantage or a point of dependency for the installation.

Independent reviews and creator videos are useful for seeing installation scale, noise, night scenes, app flow, and framing trade-offs that a specification table cannot convey. They can include affiliate links, receive pre-release units, or cover a prior firmware, so they are context rather than a substitute for the official documentation.

Local NVR and OmniNVR fit

Use the PoE variant on a suitable network, create and record the RTSP credentials in a protected inventory, and add its local stream to OmniNVR. Test RTSP, the selected Apple-home integration, and any vendor app access independently, because enabling one service does not prove the long-term operation of another.

Recommended for an exact RTSP test, not assumed compatibility. The device is a promising local stream source, but a smart-home hub's detection, HomeKit Secure Video behaviour, and native app functions should not be represented as functions that automatically appear in a third-party NVR.

Before mounting permanently, use a dedicated camera account, test the intended main and sub stream for several minutes, make a short recording, review the timeline, and restart the recorder. Do not put camera web, RTSP, or ONVIF services directly on the public internet.

Who should choose it—and who should not

It fits an Apple/Aqara home where the hub role has genuine value. A simpler PoE camera may be easier to replace, inventory, and keep running in a dedicated surveillance system. Its lack of user-removable microSD also matters to buyers who want camera-local removable storage.
