What CCTV means today
CCTV stands for closed-circuit television. “Closed circuit” describes distribution: camera video goes to selected monitors, recorders, users, or applications rather than a public television broadcast. In everyday search and consumer language, CCTV is often used broadly for video surveillance, including analog and IP camera systems. Some industry documentation uses CCTV more strictly for a particular closed analog design and describes IP cameras separately as network video.
The name does not prove that a system is offline, encrypted, private by configuration, or securely administered. A CCTV system can be local-only or remotely accessible, wired or wireless, analog or digital in the broader usage. Its real privacy and security depend on accounts, network exposure, updates, access rules, storage, and the way remote viewing is implemented.
The parts of a CCTV system
A complete system normally has five roles: cameras capture a scene; a transport carries video; a recorder or storage service preserves footage; an index makes recorded time retrievable; and a viewing client provides live view, playback, search, or export. Some products combine several roles in one appliance, while software-based systems keep the cameras, network, recorder host, storage, and viewing devices separate.
- Camera: captures video and, when supported and authorized, audio or event metadata.
- Transport: coaxial cabling, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or another supported path moves the signal.
- Recorder: a DVR, NVR, software NVR, camera edge storage, or cloud service writes footage.
- Storage and index: retain recordings by camera and time so they can be found later.
- Viewer: displays live or recorded video to an authorized operator.
A live camera app is not automatically a recorder. Verify that the system creates durable footage, enforces retention, survives interruptions, and can export a usable clip.

IP does not automatically mean cloud. An IP camera and NVR can communicate entirely on a local network. Analog does not automatically mean simpler or safer: it still needs power, recorder storage, user access, maintenance, and a secure plan for any remote connection.
Where DVRs, NVRs, RTSP, and ONVIF fit
A DVR is associated primarily with recording camera signals delivered directly to its inputs. An NVR, or network video recorder, receives compatible digital media over an IP network. The distinction describes the recording path; it does not establish image quality, storage duration, reliability, or whether a product supports a particular camera.
In an IP system, RTSP can control a real-time media session, while ONVIF can standardize discovery, media profiles, PTZ, and other physical-security interfaces. They are complementary rather than interchangeable. A camera appearing in ONVIF discovery does not guarantee that its returned stream, codec, authentication, events, or controls work with every NVR, so the exact model and workflow must be tested.
How to plan and verify a CCTV system
Begin with the questions the footage must answer: which entrances or areas matter, what detail is required, when recording must operate, how many days must be retained, who may review or export footage, and what should happen during power, network, camera, or recorder failure. Then select camera placement, lighting, power, network, recorder, and storage as one system rather than buying isolated specifications. Before relying on the installation, record one real camera through the intended path, find a known time on the timeline, export a clip, interrupt the camera connection, restart the recorder, and confirm recovery. Keep camera and recorder services off the public internet; use a maintained private-access method for remote viewing.
