UniFi NVR Instant Setup: Protect, PoE, ONVIF and RTSP

Check compatibility before you start

Choose the workflow before connecting hardware. UniFi cameras are normally managed by a console running UniFi Protect. Protect also officially supports adoption of compatible third-party ONVIF cameras, but adoption does not turn every Protect camera or recorder into a universal ONVIF or RTSP source for another NVR.

For third-party cameras in Protect, Ubiquiti says to enable ONVIF, keep the camera reachable from the UniFi NVR, and supply its ONVIF credentials. Protect can expose high- and low-quality profiles and supports selected motion, PTZ, and audio functions, while other advanced features remain limited and audio can require transcoding. Verify the current Help Center article and exact firmware rather than assuming full feature parity with UniFi cameras.

The UNVR-Instant itself has a 40 W total PoE budget and six PoE downlink ports rated up to 15.4 W each in the current US technical specifications. Check camera power demand and the regional hardware page before treating six physical ports as six guaranteed camera loads.

Add the camera or NVR channel

For Protect recording, install a supported drive, connect the uplink to the required gateway or Layer 3 network, adopt cameras, and confirm both live and recorded playback. For a third-party ONVIF camera, configure its high- and low-quality streams before adoption; if those streams change later, Ubiquiti says the camera may need to be removed and adopted again.

For OmniNVR, start with the endpoint that officially exposes a supported local stream. A third-party camera may connect directly when its model documents RTSP, RTSPS, ONVIF, or HLS. If a current Protect interface explicitly provides an export or restream address, use the address and credentials shown by that released interface. Do not copy legacy UniFi Video URLs or community port patterns and assume they apply to the NVR Instant.

Choose recording roles

Use the lower-bitrate sub stream for continuous history when it has enough detail, and reserve the main stream for focused live view or event clips. This reduces storage and decode load without giving up high-quality evidence around important moments.

Before scaling up, record one camera for at least fifteen minutes, play it from the timeline, disconnect the network briefly, and restart OmniNVR. A working live preview alone does not prove that timestamps, recovery, and storage are reliable.

Troubleshooting checklist

• NVR Instant query leads to an old UniFi NVR: confirm the model is UNVR-Instant and use its current technical page.
• Third-party camera is not found: enable ONVIF, verify credentials and time, and confirm the camera is reachable from the Protect console.
• Stream changed after adoption: remove and re-add the third-party camera as Ubiquiti documents.
• PoE device powers off: compare per-port demand and the 40 W aggregate budget with all attached cameras.
• OmniNVR cannot open a Protect camera: verify that the released Protect interface actually provides a supported local stream; Protect playback alone is not proof of a generic endpoint.
